Suite Of Four Painted Panels, Ink And Pigments On Paper - China, 20th Century
Set of four vertical panels depicting koi carp evolving in a pond, among lotus flowers, plum blossom branches and peonies. The composition is treated in the tradition of Chinese gongbi (工筆) painting - a meticulous fine brush technique - combining a golden background with vivid mineral pigments.
The four panels are divided into two pairs: a central pair with symmetrical compositions enlivened by plum tree branches, and two side panels with lotus and peony motifs. Each panel forms a self-contained scene, yet is part of a coherent whole.
The koi carp motif is traditionally associated with prosperity and longevity in Chinese iconography. Each panel bears a calligraphic inscription and two red artist's stamps.
