Plains Quiver
North America, Plains region
Leather, dyed porcupine quills, glass beads
Length: approximately 100 cm
Provenance: Bernard Souteyrand Collection
An elongated, tapered leather quiver, wide at the opening and gradually narrowing toward the tip. Long fringes of leather run along one side, extending its silhouette.
A decorative longitudinal band combines rows of dyed porcupine quills—primarily yellow—with bands of dark blue glass beads. Blue, orange, red, and white accents punctuate the design and form a geometric polychrome pattern.
The use of porcupine quills is a remarkable feature of this piece. Their preparation and application require particularly meticulous work. This ancient technique, rarely seen on quivers, lends the object special interest, enhanced by the combination with the glass beads and the fullness of its fringes.
