"Mogniat-Duclos’s work stands at the intersection of early 20th-century Expressionism and the new generation of artists that included La Patellière, Charles Dufresne, and Marcel Gromaire."
René Huyghe, of the Académie Française
Based in the bustling Montparnasse district, Bertrand Mogniat-Duclos began exhibiting his work in the 1920s. He participated in major Parisian Salons—notably the Salon des Tuileries, the Salon des Indépendants, and, from 1943 onwards, the Salon d’Automne (becoming a member in 1946). His work was also shown in several Parisian galleries, including Primavera, Gerbo, Bernheim-Jeune, Allard, and—most notably—the Katia Granoff gallery, where he exhibited regularly between 1944 and 1955. In the post-war period, he took part in numerous exhibitions in France and abroad and gained institutional recognition through the inclusion of his work in public collections, such as that of the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris.
A close associate of Amédée de La Patellière, the painter chose to work within the realm of figurative art. In his symbol-rich compositions, the human figure appears contemplative—or sometimes even absent—yet attentive to a mysterious world where elements come to life amidst a phantasmagorical nature.
