Damascened Metal Inkstand, Attributed To The Workshop Of Plácido Zuloaga — Spain, 19th Century
An elegant, truncated-cone-shaped inkwell made of dark metal with rich gilded damascene decoration, attributed to the workshop of Plácido Zuloaga.
Its decoration combines delicate foliage scrolls, arabesques, and stylized motifs, arranged within ornamental friezes. The delicacy of the design and the contrast between the dark background and the gilded ornamentation lend this object a beautiful decorative quality.
The hinged lid, which is also decorated, features a movable ring. The front bears two letters “L” in relief, surmounted by a crown, as well as a medallion with a radiating motif. These personalizing elements alone do not allow for the establishment of a specific provenance.
A 19th-century Spanish piece, in the tradition of damascene work from Eibar.
Condition: wear on the decoration, traces of oxidation—particularly beneath the base—and deterioration of the interior velvet. The object retains its rich decoration and striking presence.
