Maurice Denis (1870–1943) Original Watercolor, “view Of Lannion”

Original watercolor, located in Lannion beneath the mat. Illustration for André Suares’s *Crepuscule sur la Mer*.
Provenance: Anne Marie Denis, the artist’s daughter. Viewing dimensions: 19 x 14 cm.
The watercolor is mounted on a drawing depicting two children, one of whom is labeled “Christine.”

When asked to illustrate André Suares’s work in 1933, Maurice Denis—perhaps feeling he was no longer capable of carrying out the task properly—asked the engraver, Jacques Beltrand, to select drawings from his old sketchbooks.
Beltrand complied and selected works that were not all directly related to the text but were perfectly suited for the illustration. Our watercolor thus appears on page 85 of the book and dates from the painter’s years in Perros. As for the drawing onto which the watercolor is mounted, Christine could be Christien Lerolle, who came to stay with her father Henri at the Denis family home in Perros and who later became a muse of the Impressionists.
