*Rolo Marquetryor Tarsia di Rolo (Northern Italy, Emilia-Romagna): Particularly prizedand sought after throughout the 19th century by European art lovers,Rolo marquetry—also known as Tarsia di Rolo—was developedin the last third of the 18th century and later developed in localcabinetmaking workshops—notably those of Giuseppe Pretti (1692–1779) and Vincenzo Mari (1802–1889)—consistsof the delicate inlay and interlocking of simple geometric motifs drawnfrom the Romanesque ornamental repertoire (11th–12th centuries)—which werelater adapted and incorporated into those defining the Louis XVI and Empire styles, with their pronounced neoclassical character. Carved from native fruitwoods, these motifs, combined with a walnut frame, unfold incontinuous friezes or form a border around a central panel—rectangular or circular in shape—within which a figure, historical, allegorical, mythological, or hagiographic subject that adorns thetops of select pieces of furniture (chests, various tables, tripod side tables, console tables) crafted by the city’s cabinetmaking workshops.
