The Triumph Of Bacchus. Polychrome Glazed Porcelain Group After A Model By Ls Boizot
Artist: Samson
The Triumph of Bacchus. A polychrome glazed porcelain group with highlights, depicting a mythological subject featuring Bacchus, tutelary deity of the Theatre, autumnal feasts, and the champion of intoxication, enthroned on a rocky mound, surrounded by two of his devoted Maenads. Beside them, childlike and mischievous Bacchants frolic in playful poses. Arranged on a terrace traversed by a vine, accessories and attributes (mask, musical instruments, etc.) associated with the revelry of the Bacchanalia complete the composition of this sculptural group, modeled in 1773 by Louis-Simon Boizot (1743-1803) as the central piece (now in the National Museum of the Palaces of Versailles and Trianon, Inv. MV 7786) of a centerpiece commissioned by King Louis XVI for the Palace of Versailles. Marked in underglaze blue with crossed swords. Porcelain work from the last third of the 19th century.
