Carved And Polychrome Wooden Altarpiece Element – Central Europe, 18th Century

A beautiful carved wooden altarpiece panel in high relief, polychromed and partially gilded, depicting a scene from the Passion of Christ.
The composition shows Christ at the foot of the cross, supported by two cherubs, in a still-lively pose, while the Sorrowful Virgin appears in the background, her arms outstretched and her face raised toward heaven in an attitude of intercession.
The entire scene stands out against a radiant background featuring a finely engraved and gilded solar motif—a particularly expressive element that reinforces the scene’s spiritual dimension.
The base, treated like an altar or a sarcophagus, symbolically evokes the death and resurrection of Christ. The iconographic interpretation thus blends several themes—the Passion, Compassion, and Resurrection—in a synthesis characteristic of popular devotional art.
The work features deliberately expressive modeling, with foreshortened proportions and stylized faces, typical of provincial workshops in Central Europe.
The original polychrome paint, combined with a mixtion gilding, has developed a beautiful patina from use and retains a very appealing decorative appearance.
The piece is currently mounted in a wooden frame (probably from the 19th century).
