Impressive bust in Carrara marble, representing life-size a Virgin of Sorrows or Mater Dolorasa. French or Italian school of the end of the 17th century beginning of the 17th century.
This bust is of great quality and exudes a very intense spirituality.
The sculptor knew with great virtuosity how to make palpable the pain of the Holy Virgin, at the moment when she sees Christ dead on the cross. She is at the foot of this cross and expresses her sorrow accompanied by Saint John.
The pain and the sorrow which emerge from this sculpture testify to the strength of the love which she bears to her son.
A sculpture carrying a great emotion.
It is reminiscent of certain representations of Mary Magdalene which one finds in Roman churches.
It rests on a pedestal in white marble. A small restoration on the nose and on the veil.
