Vintage Louis XV-era Rosewood And Gilded Bronze Inkstand And Candlestick

A charming Louis XV-era inkwell and candleholder, dating from the 18th century, crafted from rosewood veneer and richly adorned with gilded bronze.
It features a kidney-shaped form; this unusual shape is also found in certain pieces of Louis XV furniture.

With its undulating “kidney-shaped” form, characteristic of the Louis XV style, it features elegant proportions and a beautiful harmony between the warmth of the rosewood and the subdued luster of the gilded bronze.

The top features three deep gilded bronze compartments with finely molded rims, one of which has a lid. Two pen holders complete this ingenious writing set. These various compartments were used to store ink, sand for drying ink, and the small accessories essential for correspondence.

On the side, a gilded bronze handle, adorned with a long stylized palmette or shell, incorporates a cup designed to hold a candle.

This ingenious design made it possible to write in the evening while easily and safely moving the entire set.

The inkwell rests on three elegant gilded bronze legs decorated with acanthus leaves, ending in small feet.

A charming 18th-century writing instrument, both functional and decorative, which has become rare in this portable configuration combining an inkwell and a candlestick.

In good overall condition. Note a small, barely visible chip in the veneer on the top, as well as slight wear and the usual signs of use expected for an object of this age.
