This is a superb Post-Impressionist composition by Gustave Madelain, who, nine times out of ten, painted views of Paris; here, a magnificent scene bustling with numerous figures on the Pont des Arts in front of the Institut, created in December 1929. At this time, the artist was at the height of his artistic powers; he continued to employ his Impressionist brushwork, rich in texture, and, of course, his very distinctive palette dominated by shades of orange, yellow, mauve, sky blue, turquoise, and finally a few tiny touches of vermilion red on some of the figures, which enhance the entire composition.
Gustave Madelain (1867–1944) was a French painter, born in Charly.
This Impressionist painter studied in Paris and, beginning in 1907, exhibited successfully at the Salon des Indépendants, where he received numerous awards for his landscapes and cityscapes.
His paintings are authentic depictions of daily life in early 20th-century Paris. He earned a reputation as a painter of river quays, often featuring monumental architectural subjects depicted at dusk and rendered with a subtle palette rich in tones.
Madelain’s retrospective (Paris, 1926) was a great success, with six architectural works purchased by the French government.
He is sometimes compared to Albert Lebourg for his depictions of the capital. Today, he enjoys an international reputation.
