Rare Gothic Style Chalice Made Of Solid Silver – Early 17th Century
A remarkable Gothic chalice made of solid silver, dating from the late 15th century, likely crafted in the Low Countries, Flanders, or Germany.
It rests on an elegant, multi-lobed base adorned with engraved motifs, surmounted by an ornate stem featuring, at its center, a large openwork Gothic knot decorated with engraved diamond-shaped elements.
The bowl, particularly slender and graceful, has a simple, slightly flared shape. Its interior is entirely gilded, in accordance with the liturgical use of this type of Eucharistic vessel.
The base bears a later inscription dated 1624, accompanied by an engraved emblem. This inscription likely attests to a donation or a new purpose for the chalice in the early 17th century, at a time when the object was already more than a century old.
A very fine example of religious metalwork from the late Middle Ages, retaining the typical characteristics of the Late Gothic style, and particularly interesting due to its documented reuse in 1624.
