Large Baroque-style Frame With Mirror In Ebony, Bone And Tortoiseshell - Italy - 19th Century
A superb rectangular frame, richly decorated with dark wood inlays, finely carved bone, and genuine deep red tortoiseshell plaques. The decoration is typically Baroque, composed of foliate scrolls, volutes, and oval cartouches executed with great finesse. The outer border, punctuated by alternating dark and light moldings, reinforces the architectural character of the whole. This type of work directly echoes the Baroque frames of Southern Italy and Sicily, renowned in the 17th century for their contrasting marquetry combining precious woods, carved bone, and genuine tortoiseshell. The frame is in very good overall condition, displaying a beautiful patina and some signs of wear consistent with its age. There is now a mirror in the frame.
