Pharmacy Or Apothecary Mortar
Marble pharmacy or apothecary mortar.
This model, featuring four handles carved with anthropomorphic heads, follows the tradition of mortars from the late Middle Ages through the Renaissance (13th–16th centuries). The protrusions (or knobs) originally served as handles to stabilize the object during grinding.
Although there is no fixed lid for grinding, this groove allowed for the placement of a removable lid (often made of wood or metal) to protect the preparations from dust between uses or to let precious ingredients steep away from the air.
