DAUM NANCY— Exceptional Art Nouveau vase, “Lakeside Landscape at Dusk,” 66cm.
Description of the vase:
Large multilayered glass vase, 66 cmtall, Art Nouveau style, Nancy, early 20th century (circa 1910).
Its height of 66 cm makes it a relatively rare masterpiece.
The shape is that of a “cornet” or “long-necked” vase resting on a bulb or pedestal.
The design depicts a sunset landscape—trees and hills in shadesof red and orange.
The scene is enhanced by branches and leaves in relief, motifscharacteristic of the manufacturer.
The base of the vase is marbled glass (yellow and orange glass powders incorporated into the mass) onto which a thick layer of darker glass (brown and purple) has been applied.
The design was entirely etched using acid by immersing certain parts of the vase in a hydrofluoric acid bath to etch the glass and reveal different shades in the background.
The signature “DaumNancy France” with the Cross of Lorraine is an integral part of the vase’s body.

Founded in 1878 in Nancy, the Daum glassworks began asa manufacturer of bottles and goblets, saved from closure by Jean Daum.
His sons Auguste and Antonin quickly transformed it into a leadingart glassworks; the Daum brothers established an innovative style, celebrated atthe World’s Fairs of 1893 and 1900.
In 1901, Antonin Daum founded the École de Nancyalongside Émile Gallé and Louis Majorelle, making the factory one of thepioneers of French Art Nouveau.
The factory’s reputation rests on itsmastery of decorated glass.
