Jean-Baptiste Auguste Clésinger (1814–1883), known as J. Clésinger, was a 19th-century French sculptor and painter, renowned for his realistic and romantic works. A student of David d'Angers, he distinguished himself with portraits and allegorical sculptures, often characterized by great expressiveness and virtuoso technique. His most famous work, Woman Bitten by a Snake (1847), sparked controversy for its sensual realism and audacity. Clésinger was also close to the artistic and literary circles of his time, notably George Sand and Frédéric Chopin.
