The sculpture and patina are in good condition, and the signature "BARYE" is visible on the terrace.
Of particular note is the presence of an old label beneath the terrace.
This label indicates that it belonged to a firm specializing in "bronces artísticos" (artistic bronzes), located at Calle Fernando VII, 37 and Aviñó, 5 in Barcelona (an address that no longer exists). T
his establishment was known as "Casa Especial en Novedades Olivella Hnos" and presented itself as an "Antigua Casa Bach," suggesting a long tradition in the field of bronze casting and the sale of artistic bronzes.
The production of this bronze was certainly carried out during the third quarter of the 19th century specifically by this firm. Indeed, in Spain, some foundries associated with auction houses used to mark their bronzes and other objects with a small letter or discreet symbol, as we can see here with the letter G preceding the signature Barye.
Antoine-Louis Barye (1796–1875) was a French sculptor and painter, famous for his animal works with remarkable realism and expressiveness. He is considered one of the greatest masters of 19th-century animal sculpture.
