This exceptional work is among the most sought-after creations by this painter: nocturnal or semi-nocturnal views. Born in Rouen, Édouard Daliphard was one of the most promising artists of his generation, and many critics saw him as a successor to Daubigny. He also participated in several events alongside the master to promote his work. He studied in Antwerp, The Hague, and then at the Brussels Academy in the studio of the painter Joseph Quinaux. The latter would have a lasting influence on the painter’s Romantic choices. Melancholic by nature, his subjects are indeed often somber, and his style is unmistakable. In this oil painting, the orange hues of twilight contrast with the menacing darkness of the barge and the groves along the banks of the Seine. He died prematurely at the age of 43, leaving behind a small body of meticulous and profound works.
The Fine Arts Museums of Rouen and Reims hold several of the artist’s oil paintings.
