Theatrical man and decorator, Louis-Jacques Vigon (1897-1985) took part in Diaghilev's Ballets Russes adventure in London. He met Juan Gris, Francis Picabia and Albert Gleizes at the Bateau Lavoir and worked for the Opéra de Paris and the Opéra-Comique. He then returned to Rouen, where he mainly painted views of the city and, more rarely, seascapes and portraits. This taste for theatricality is particularly evident in this large canvas with its perfectly controlled lighting, where the buildings of Rouen are set up, like the panels of a set, framing a composition full of life.
