Gaston de la Querrière was a painter of the Rouen School. Familiar with the tranquil banks of the Seine and the views of old Rouen, his relatively small body of work was produced primarily at the turn of the century. In this composition, the colors chosen are, as usual, very vivid, featuring superb shades of orange, purple, and yellow. The choice of viewpoint, however, is more unusual, as painters have often depicted Rue Saint-Romain in portrait orientation and from the street itself. Its large format stands in contrast to most of his works, as the painter preferred more intimate formats. However, his highly recognizable style remains evident, characterized on the one hand by a dynamism created by the figures in the foreground and, on the other, by a selection of cheerful and modern colors for a work dated 1927.
