Artist: Marcel Bertoin
Bertoin – Lively View of an Italian Square, Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere (Rome) – Oil on panel – Circa 1940–1960. A charming urban scene depicting a sunny Italian square around a large monumental fountain, with silhouettes of strollers and a Romanesque square bell tower on the right. The scene evokes the Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere in Rome. Lively brushstrokes, a warm palette (ochres, brick reds, softened blues), and a highly decorative southern atmosphere. The composition is clear and legible, the perspective masterful, and the paint applied in supple impasto. The light, filtered through the warm facades, emphasizes the monumentality of the fountain and the architectural rhythm. Post-Impressionist style, a taste for lively scenes and vibrant colors, typical of mid-20th-century traveling painters. A spiritual affinity with the southern landscapes of Cavaillès, Toffoli, Jannot, and even certain urban perspectives by Antoine Blanchard, while maintaining a distinct personality in the synthesis of volumes and chromatic warmth. Marcel Bertoin (1897–1983) was a French painter born in Châteauneuf-sur-Cher. A chemical engineer by training, he devoted himself to painting alongside his studies, notably living in Toulouse before settling in the Southwest (he died in Biarritz). His work favored landscapes and genre scenes, Mediterranean ports and urban views, often signed "Bertoin," with a particularly prolific output during the 1940s and 1950s. His works regularly appear at auction, attesting to collectors' continued interest in his luminous palette and sense of atmosphere. French School, circa 1940–1960. Roman subject. Oil on panel, framed in wood and silver-grey patinated stucco. Dimensions: Overall dimensions (with frame): 56 × 47 cm. Visible dimensions: approximately 40 × 31 cm. Signature/Inscriptions/Labels: Signed Bertoin lower right. Subject characteristic of 20th-century Italian travel painting. Good overall condition; fresh colors. Frame with slight signs of wear. Antique frame in wood and silver-grey patinated stucco.
