A beautiful series of six gouaches on paper depicting rural landscapes and scenes of daily life, created by René Auguste Aristide Benon, a painter active in the Vienne region and in Châtellerault in the late 19th century. The artist is listed under the name Aristide Benon in regional heritage collections.

Each composition depicts a distinct landscape, treated as a small, self-contained scene. Sunken paths, rural houses, forest edges, ponds, solitary trees, pastures, and peasant figures come together to form a cohesive series dedicated to the Poitou countryside.

Several gouaches depict figures engaged in simple activities: a walker on a path, a peasant woman accompanied by geese, people returning from the fields, and villagers moving about near a house or a farm. These human figures, depicted on a very small scale, lend the landscapes a narrative dimension and reflect the artist’s attention to rural daily life.

One of the compositions stands out for its nocturnal atmosphere. A man walks alone along a forest path beneath a large, yellow lunar disk. The moonlight pierces the clouds and illuminates the path with a band of light, while the trees and the cabin remain shrouded in bluish grays and deep blacks. This moonlit scene lends the work as a whole a more romantic and mysterious tone.

The other works focus on morning or evening light. The skies range from pale blue to golden yellow, while the foliage is rendered in greens, ochres, and browns. The gouache depicting the peasant woman and her geese is particularly striking for the warm light filtering through the trees. The light brushstrokes arranged around the foliage and at the edge of the field create a very delicate backlighting effect.

The technique is refined and precise. The gouache is applied to the paper in small, layered strokes—sometimes very opaque, sometimes lighter—to preserve the transparency of the sky and the distant landscape. The trees are built up with a succession of brief brushstrokes, while the paths and meadows are rendered with smudges and freer, overlapping strokes.
