Three-quarter bust in a dark interior; hands and instrument treated with care. Measured chiaroscuro and warm palette; flesh modeled with transparent glazes, enhanced with impasto in the whites. Solid drawing of the hands, naturalistic precision of the instrument. A seductive painting by the quality of the glazes and the harmony of browns, ochres and flesh, typical of an “Italianate” repertoire much appreciated on the Côte d’Azur in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Related to salon Italy: Tito Conti (narrative elegance), Eugenio Zampighi and Gaetano Bellei (luminous genre scenes), and, for the singing chiaroscuro, the legacy of Favretto. The print confirms a commercial supply from the period 8 rue du pont Neuf; the condition of the marking does not allow the dating to be refined beyond the stylistic range.
