Large Ceremonial Armchair With Flat Back, Renaissance Style, Carved Wood, Dragon Motif, 19th-century Upholstery
Large carved wooden armchair, a 19th-century French piece in the Renaissance style, featuring rich and highly decorative design elements inspired by 16th- and 17th-century furniture.
The tall, rectangular backrest is upholstered with a figurative and ornamental tapestry in a palette of beige, red, brown, and ochre. The seat follows the same decorative theme, featuring an antique tapestry enlivened by historical and botanical motifs. The ensemble creates a highly decorative contrast with the brown hue of the wood.
The armrests are heavily carved with volutes, foliage, and scrollwork. The armrest brackets, connecting blocks, and legs are also adorned with deeply carved floral motifs. The openwork, carved front crossbar features a symmetrical composition of foliage and scrollwork. The front legs terminate in wide, carved bases, giving the armchair a visually monumental presence.
The decorative vocabulary—combining scrolls, foliage, volutes, turned architectural elements, and high-relief carving—clearly links this piece to the historicist Renaissance style, which was highly prized in the 19th century for furnishing bourgeois residences, castles, and grand interiors.
