Neo-renaissance Walnut Armchair
Napoleon III-period high-back armchair in carved walnut in the Renaissance style. The crown of the backrest is centered by an imposing mascaron featuring a bearded man's face framed by outstretched wings, a motif characteristic of the eclectic ornamental repertoire of the 19th century. The uprights are turned and carved, extending scrolled armrests supported by baluster brackets. The seat and backrest are upholstered in a floral fabric, held in place by brass upholsterer's studding. The base, with turned legs, is joined by an H-shaped brace. This chair illustrates the historicist movement of the Second Empire, which reinterpreted the decorative vocabulary of the 16th and 17th centuries.
