Carved Wooden Trumeau With Bagpipe Decoration
An 18th-century trumeau in carved and painted wood, originally designed to be integrated into a wood panel or to top a mantelpiece. The lower part houses a rectangular mirror framed by a scrolled molding. The top panel is adorned with a pastoral-inspired music trophy carved in relief, featuring a bagpipe (or court musette) suspended from a knotted ribbon and surrounded by branches and foliage. This type of ornamentation illustrates the taste for country life and the theme of the idealized sheepfold, very much in vogue in French decorative arts during the reigns of Louis XV and Louis XVI. The whole piece has a light-toned, antique patina.
