Lovely Neoclassical Gouache, French School, circa 1795–1810: Vertumnus and Pomona (Allegory of Abundance). Against an idealized landscape background, a draped nymph picks fruit while a young man in the antique style offers her a bowl. Beautiful freshness of colors; slight wear to the edge, some pinholes, small losses in the top of the sheet and stains in the lower left. Work in the current of the Neoclassical vogue fueled by engravings in the manner of Angelica Kauffmann (Bartolozzi, Delattre) and by the subjects of Vertumnus and Pomona widely distributed in prints.
