Rare anatomical study depicting a flayed human leg, cast in plaster and intended for the teaching of drawing, artistic anatomy, and sculpture.

Depicting the leg from the top of the thigh down to the foot, this piece stands out for the high quality of its modeling, the finesse of its details, and the dynamic energy of its execution. The sculpture accurately renders the various muscle groups of the thigh and calf, the tendons, the joints, and the anatomical network visible on the top of the foot.

The foot adopts an arched position, stretched forward, which highlights the musculature and accentuates the sense of movement. This position creates a dynamic tension that gives the entire piece a genuine sculptural presence. The rendering of the toes deserves special attention: each is isolated, fully modeled, and distinct, with meticulous attention to their placement and joints. This level of finesse is uncommon in anatomical models intended for educational purposes.

The slightly bent leg, the arch of the foot, and the tension in the muscles give this study an expressiveness that transcends its mere educational function. The plaster possesses the vitality of a true studio sculpture, designed to convey both anatomical knowledge and the movement of the human body.

The cast is hollow and retains its original metal suspension ring at the top. This device allowed the model to be suspended in an art academy or studio so that it could be studied from different angles.

A European academic work, comparable to the teaching models used in French, Belgian, and Dutch fine arts academies in the 19th century; as an identical model is documented as having come from the plaster collection of the Rijksakademie van beeldende kunsten in Amsterdam.

The dimensions, the position of the leg, the arched foot, the rendering of the muscle groups, and the presence of a suspension system allow for a strong comparison between the two models.
