Large Nocturnal Seascape – Fishermen By Lantern Light – 19th Century

Impressive oil on canvas depicting a nocturnal fishing scene.

In a dark and highly atmospheric setting, several fishermen are shown working around their boats, illuminated by the warm glow of lanterns. Their figures stand out dramatically against the night, creating beautiful contrasts of light and shadow and giving the composition a strong, mysterious presence.

The unusual and spectacular subject, together with the painting’s large dimensions, makes it a particularly decorative work.

The canvas bears a long signature in the lower part, but it remains difficult to decipher. As a precaution, we do not propose any attribution, although the composition and atmosphere may evoke a Northern European school.

This old painting has undergone previous restoration and shows some signs of age, including small areas of damage and minor perforations visible in the photographs. Further restoration would enhance its appearance, although it remains presentable in its current condition.

Presented in a beautiful antique giltwood and composition frame, also showing some age-related wear.
