Belt Rattle. Chiseled And Openwork Silver. Spain, 18th Century. 16 Cm
A remarkable piece of civilian goldsmithing designed to protect newborns. The piece is constructed around a system of chains composed of openwork oval links with delicate scalloped edges, connected to an upper suspension ring designed to be attached to the belt of the child’s garment.
Suspended from the chains is a silver lion figure, finely chased in the mane and anatomical details. Bells hang beneath the lion.
In addition to their function as rattles, these objects were also designed as protective amulets against the evil eye and childhood illnesses. The lion figure traditionally symbolizes strength and courage.
An extremely rare piece of its kind, characterized by its articulated chains and zoomorphic iconography.
