Pendulum Clock. France, Empire Period.
Mercury gilded bronze and patinated bronze.
The set is articulated on a prismatic stepped base, richly decorated with neoclassical-inspired low and medium relief (garlands, plant motifs and symbolic elements). On this base is a sculpted group featuring an idealized male figure of clear classical descent, holding a staff and accompanied by an animal. Paris movement, striking hours and half-hours, eight-day power reserve.
The figure represents a high-ranking ecclesiastical figure, identifiable by the mitre he wears on his head, an attribute peculiar to bishops or saints linked to the Church hierarchy.
The metal cladding, worked in molded sheets, fulfills not only an aesthetic function, but also a symbolic one, evoking wealth, sacredness and divine light. The plates seem to adapt to the folds of the garment, suggesting an interest in texture and volume. Similarly, the contrast between the dark wooden face and the gold of the outfit accentuates the figure's expressiveness.
