Peasant Couple. Cookie. Italy. 18th Century. 30 Cm.
The two peasant figures are made in "cookie", an unglazed porcelain with a soft, matte surface, in order to emphasize the modelling, folds and expression, rather than the brilliance of the glaze or pictorial decoration.
From an iconographic point of view, the female figure appears in a restrained posture, raising her hand slightly. On the other hand, the male figure introduces more dynamism, placing his hand on his hip.
From a stylistic point of view, on the one hand we observe the movement, vivacity and pastoral theme characteristic of the rococo; but the more sober treatment of the material, in a "simple" cookie, as well as the simplification of shapes and volumes, already herald a nascent neoclassicism.
