Oriental Figure. Carved And Patinated Ironwood
It could be a representation of a wandering monk or a sage. The serene facial expression, pronounced beard and what appears to be the representation of a sword in the back are carved from ironwood, a particularly hard tropical wood. The figure is depicted in a contemplative attitude, a symbol of wisdom, introspection and humility. Late 19th - early 20th century, probably during the Meiji Restoration period
