Travel Desk Box. Second Empire. Painted Wood And Brass Marquetry
A refined desk set belonging to the Second Empire (mid-19th century). An elegant yet functional piece.
The brass marquetry that covers the entire exterior is composed of symmetrical motifs, with plant elements and scrolls, providing a strong chromatic contrast with the dark hue of the wood patina and a highly sophisticated visual effect.
The handles, both on the exterior and on each of the organized interior compartments, are also in brass. These drawers were used to store writing utensils, documents, etc. The last of these is removable and independent of the whole, and occupies the entire surface of the box.
