Spiked Dog Collar (carlanca). Wrought Iron. 50 × 12 Cm When Open (16 Cm In Diameter When Closed).
The carlanca, or mastiff-style dog collar, was used to protect these large dogs—which accompanied and guarded herds—from the bites of wolves and other predators.
It consists of several articulated iron components fitted with sturdy spikes designed to provide this protection. Its use became widespread beginning in the 18th century, although the existence of this type of collar had already been documented in the Middle Ages.
This piece is a remarkable example of traditional wrought-iron craftsmanship.
