Pair Of Portraits. Gouaches (pictorial Technique). Empire Period. France.
"Portrait of a refined and elegant military man and lady, with great sobriety and a highly decorative character. Dated to the early 19th century (1804-1815), the faces appear deliberately idealized, with restrained expression. The clothing, particularly that of the lady, and the hairstyle itself, are undoubtedly in the Empire style, following classical models. The use of the gouache painting technique results in a matte surface which, combined with the meticulous detail, lends this pair of portraits a great intimacy. The soft chromatic palette, dominated by blue tones on light skin tones, lends them a refined elegance. The frames are distinguished by rosettes at the corners and beaded moldings, highly representative of the neoclassical taste of the period.
