Inmaculada. Juan Bernabé Palomino (1692/1777). Calfskin.
An engraver and painter, and the nephew of Antonio Palomino de Castro—also a painter—Juan Bernabé Palomino served as engraver to the Royal Household and director of the engraving department at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Spain.
This work is executed on precious vellum, that is, a very high-quality parchment made from calfskin that has been carefully prepared, scraped, and polished to produce a white, smooth, and extremely fine surface.
It depicts the Immaculate Conception surrounded by cherubs bearing the Virgin’s traditional iconographic attributes: lilies, a palm branch, the serpent crushed beneath her feet, as well as a deep blue cloak and a white tunic.
The vertical composition stands out for the brilliance and intensity of its colors, which lend the work great visual impact and a remarkable presence.
