“Black Woman in Algiers,” watercolor with gouache, 21.5 × 13.3 cm, titled and dated 1859.
This watercolor, for which I have retained the original title—which, admittedly, mayseem offensive today but was common practice at the time—depicts acharming Black woman in colorful clothing, carrying a basket,likely on her way to the market.
