Antique Cast-iron Mortar, Small Apothecary Model, Late 15th–early 16th Century — Patina From Use

Mortar in old cast metal, probable Spain or southern France, late 15th–early 16th century. Small table or apothecary model, solid and dense, with a homogeneous brown‑olive patina and signs of long use. Height 8 cm, weight 1 450 g.

The piece has a short, thick‑walled body with lateral passing‑rings and vertical ribs typical of pre‑industrial castings. The interior shows carbonaceous deposits and pitting consistent with prolonged use (herb grinding, organic residues). Around the rim there are concentric machining rings from a later trimming of the edge, together with small points related to the moulding and hand finishing. Patina and oxidation (localized verdigris) are consistent with natural ageing.

Dating and origin: typology and sand‑mould casting technique point to a late 15th–early 16th century production; probable Iberian (Castile) or southern French origin.
