Decorative Bronze Sculpture, Candelabra In The Japanese Style - French School, 20th Century
Decorative bronze sculpture, candelabra in the Japonisme style - French School, 20th century, France - first half of the 20th century. Cold-painted bronze - Green patina. This refined decorative sculpture depicts a Japanese crane (tsuru) with finely chiseled plumage, perched gracefully on the shell of a stylized tortoise—an allegory of longevity and wisdom in Japanese culture. The piece rests on a four-legged base adorned with foliage and flower buds, evoking a stylized nature in motion. Three floral corollas rise from the base. One candelabra holds a candle holder, while the other two complete the decorative balance of the composition. The delicately crafted fan behind the crane reinforces the Japonisme aesthetic of the whole. This work, inspired by Meiji-era productions, testifies to the influence of Japonisme on early 20th-century European decorative arts. It embodies the transition to Art Nouveau, where organic lines and naturalistic motifs become a decorative language. Height: 26.5 cm Width: 22 cm approx. Materials: Cold-painted bronze Style: Japonisme / Decorative Art / Stylized Naturalism Symbolism: The crane and the tortoise, together, evoke peace, longevity, and cosmic harmony Function: Decorative sculpture and candelabra Probable provenance: French decorative workshop, unsigned Weight: 1.167 kg Condition: Very good condition, slightly patinated with age.
