Impressive Covered Polychrome Earthenware Vase - After Delft - Géo Martel Art Pottery
Covered polychrome earthenware potiche, hand-painted decoration after Delft – Géo Martel Art Pottery, 20th century. Elegant and spectacular, this monumental potiche, in the Dutch Baroque style with touches of chinoiserie, is made of glazed earthenware and embodies the legacy of the great 17th-century master potters, while bearing the artistic signature of the Géo Martel Art Pottery. Directly inspired by Delft traditions, it features a sumptuous reserve decoration of lively scenes, enhanced with floral and avian motifs in a vibrant palette of cobalt blue, iron red, emerald green, and golden ochre. The decoration unfolds in a succession of finely outlined vertical panels, each revealing a narrative or ornamental scene inspired by the great Asian and European traditions. Against an ivory background, the artists have orchestrated a veritable symphony of colors—carmine red, cobalt blue, celadon green, and antique gold—to animate a series of miniature paintings. Some panels depict bucolic landscapes where exotic birds flit among flowering branches, evoking Japanese prints or Chinese imperial gardens. Others present more stylized compositions, where one can discern pavilions, bridges, and delicately sketched human figures in an atmosphere of contemplation. Between the scenes, floral arabesques and geometric patterns punctuate the surface, creating a subtle balance between figuration and abstraction. The flowers—peonies, chrysanthemums, lotuses—are rendered with botanical precision and a vibrant palette, highlighting the skill of the pottery's painters. Crowning the vase majestically, the glazed earthenware lid is distinguished by its abundant decoration and its sculpted, three-dimensional figure of a stylized lion, an emblem of vigilance and nobility in the European decorative tradition. Seated in a proud posture, the animal is enhanced with vivid hues—celadon green, deep blue, burnt orange—that interact with the floral arabesques and symmetrical geometric patterns adorning the dome. Each element of the lid is meticulously drawn and hand-painted, respecting 17th-century techniques, giving the piece a rare visual richness and authenticity. Selected from among the 6,000 pieces in the master potter's personal collection, this reproduction is accompanied by its certificate of manufacture, attesting to its unique character. The handwritten inscription "Handmade Delft decoration" on the base underscores its artisanal origin. The vase rests on a five-legged, carved exotic wood base, adding to its majesty and stability. The piece is presented in perfect condition, without chips, cracks, or restorations, attesting to exemplary conservation care.
