The globe still bears its original cartouche reading “J. Lebègue & Cie, Publishers, Paris – Globe Terrestre” and retains its richly detailed printed geographical surface in attractive shades of green, ochre, and blue.

The sphere, which is particularly lightweight, was crafted using a traditional technique, with cartographic strips printed on paper and applied to a papier-mâché structure. It rests on a remarkable cast-iron tripod base, richly adorned with sculpted faces, foliage motifs, and imposing legs shaped like paws. The highly elaborate decoration of the base gives the globe aparticularly sculptural and unusual presence.

The globe is held in place by an elegant metal arm featuring a screw-adjustment mechanism as well as a metal element at the upper pole. The various metal elements have acquired a beautiful dark patina over time.

The map surface shows clearly visible signs of age, including scuffs, scratches, marks, discoloration, and a few surface missing patches, all consistent with its age and long use. This authentic patina gives it a great deal of character while still revealing a remarkable amount of geographic detail.
