This drawing, with an indistinct signature and likely dated 1889, is an exact reproduction of a work signed by Josef Kriehuber and engraved by Ernst Ebenstein in the second half of the 19th century.

Josef Kriehuber (1800 Vienna, 1876 Vienna) was an Austrian painter and lithographer trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, who produced no fewer than three thousand lithographs throughout his career, as well as some two hundred paintings (portraits and landscapes) intended for the high-society clientele of Viennese society : actors, painters, writers, musicians, and members of the imperial family and the aristocracy.

This highly sensitive drawing depicts the portrait of a young schoolboy, seen in three-quarter profile, his absorbed gaze fixed on the distance. His regular, almost feminine features are finely sketched, right down to the delicately rendered eyelashes. The same skill is evident in the depiction of the carefully combed hair, from which a few curls or strands escape.
