This watercolor is the work of a certain G. Laporte. The artist, who is notlisted in any catalog, drew direct inspiration from La Primevère by Alfons Mucha, published between 1897 and 1899 in Paris by the publisher F. Champenois.
Created in 1915, it is therefore virtually contemporary with the lithographby the Czechoslovakian poster artist who died on the eve of World War II.
In a slightly more streamlined version, Laporte adopts all the hallmarks that made Mucha—a major representative of Art Nouveau—so successful: a graceful female figure with flowing hair, adorned with sumptuous and refined jewelry, wearing a halo decorated with filigree, draped in a flowing tunic, and surrounded by stylized floral motifs.
