Pair Of Etruscan-style Mahogany Chairs Attributed To Henri Jacob—directoire Period

Pair of Etruscan-style chairs in molded and carved mahogany. Beautiful, very delicate decoration; the chairs stand on tall legs, with tapered legs at the front and saber-shaped legs at the back. The scalloped backrest is carved with a cascade of lambrequins. Their form is directly inspired by Roman furniture depicted in the frescoes of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Parisian work from the late 18th century, Directoire period, circa 1795–1800.

Our chairs are not stamped but are undoubtedly the work of a great Parisian cabinetmaker; in our opinion, Henri Jacob, given the numerous similarities with the decorations and finishes of chairs stamped by this cabinetmaker.

The seats have been fully restored, the buffed varnish has been renewed, and they are upholstered in striped silk from the House of Lelièvre. The chairs have retained their original 18th-century straps on the underside.
