Carved Black Stone Statue Of Ganesha, India, 17th Century

A very rare carved black stone threshold Ganesh (possibly basalt or black schist), depicting the deity seated and holding his attributes in his four arms.
Traces of ritual pigments (sindoor) and a superb patina.

A museum-quality piece of rare excellence, this sculpture of Ganesha was once placed at the top of a doorway in a wealthy Indian residence. 

Similar pieces of inferior craftsmanship and in poorer condition are currently on display at the National Museum in New Delhi. The last two images show comparable examples published in reference works and currently held in prestigious public and private collections. 

In Hindu tradition and according to the rules of Vastu Shastra (traditional Indian architecture), Ganesha is considered the ultimate protector of doorways.

According to mythology, the goddess Parvati created Ganesha to stand guard at her door. He is therefore the natural guardian of thresholds, charged with warding off negative energies and welcoming prosperity and good fortune to all who enter.
