Aubusson Alcove Tapestry, Garlands And Bouquets Of Flowers, 19th Century, 377 Cm

A rare and significant 19th-century Aubusson tapestry alcove hanging, created in the decorative style of 18th-century France.

Intended to frame a ceremonial bed or a reception alcove, this remarkable textile composition features the dynamic architectural lines characteristic of the Rocaille style. A vast upper lambrequin with scalloped edges is extended by two long side drapes, whose sinuous panels feature a continuous design of bouquets, garlands, and cascading flowers rendered in subtle shades.

The design, characterized by great lightness, features a floral repertoire inspired by decorative motifs from the reign of Louis XV: roses, peonies, wildflowers, and foliage are arranged in hanging garlands and floral cartouches on an ivory background delicately contrasted by a crimson red silk velvet border. This chromatic contrast lends the piece a particularly elegant decorative presence.

With its exceptional dimensions—nearly 3.80 meters in height—this wallhanging evokes the textile decorations of 19th-century castle apartments and grand mansions, where alcoves were still an essential element of interior design. This type of work, fragile by nature and often dismantled over time, is now rare to find in a state of preservation that still allows for its exhibition.

The entire piece is fully lined on the reverse with wool and fabric, a traditional protective measure intended to reinforce its structure and shield the tapestry from the mechanical stresses associated with hanging it.

Beyond its original function, this piece can now be returned to its intended purpose as a headboard for a luxurious bed or serve as a spectacular wall decoration in a library, living room, historic residence, or a design project inspired by French aristocratic interiors.

Condition:
Remarkably well-preserved for this type of antique decorative textile. A few minor signs of use and localized wear, barely noticeable once the tapestry is hung. These do not in any way affect the decorative quality of the piece, which retains a majestic and particularly alluring appearance.
