The Artist: Louis Chervin (1905–1969)
Born in Paris, Louis Chervin began exhibiting at a very young age in the major Parisian salons (such as the Salon des Indépendants as early as 1927).
He exhibited in Paris and was quickly noticed at the age of 17; orphaned at age 5, he had to leave school very early to earn a living and painted in his spare time without the guidance of any teacher.

In the 1930s, he was part of a group of painters called “La Horde de Montparnasse.” " In Montmartre, he knew everyone. He was particularly close to Gen Paul and André Utter, Suzanne Valadon’s husband, as well as Le Vigan, Marcel Aymé, and Céline, whom he likely met at Gen Paul’s home.
As an artist from Montmartre, his technical mastery and sensitivity toward seascapes earned him the title of Official Painter of the Navy in 1957.
Our watercolor depicts a harbor or maritime channel at low tide, a favorite subject for the artist, who painted extensively along the coasts of the English Channel and northern France (such as Saint-Malo, Gravelines, and Petit-Fort-Philippe).
It features his recognizable style, combining precise pen-and-ink or pencil drawing to outline the rigging of the sailboats with broad, fluid washes of watercolor to capture the shifting light of the sky and the reflections on the water.
