Oil On Canvas: Rooster In A Farmyard, Rural Scene, France, 20th Century

A charming oil-on-canvas painting of a rooster proudly reigning over his farmyard. The canvas is signed “Qerbaud” in the lower right corner. France, second half of the 20th century. In very good condition, though there is a chip of paint in the lower left corner.

The painter presents us with a beautiful rural scene on this canvas. Everything here exudes a folk charm: the shelves filled with everyday objects, the hens roaming freely in this room, and the rooster—the quintessential symbol of France—proudly perched right in the center of the canvas. A little slice of France immortalized in paint! The color palette is simply sublime. From the reds of the combs and the purplish blues of the rooster to the shades of the straw bedding, the artist clearly knew what he was doing! Of particular note is the ray of light streaming in through the window, drawing our gaze toward the main subject.
