Early 17th–18th-century Drawing, "the Lamentation Of Christ," Signed "anton Van Dyck"

Beautiful antique drawing based on the original work by the world-renowned painter and draftsman Anton van Dyck
Our drawing depicts the famous composition *The Lamentation over the Dead Christ* (or *Pietà*), originally created by the great Flemish Baroque painter Anton van Dyck (1599–1641).
Characteristics of the work: The signature visible in the lower right corner of the sheet (“ Ant. van Dyck fecit”) indicates that this is a work executed based on his iconic model, which he rendered in several famous paintings now on display at the Prado Museum in Madrid or the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (KMSKA).
Iconographic subject: The scene depicts the Virgin Mary, bathed in tears, supporting the lifeless body of Christ.
At her side, Mary Magdalene, kneeling, devoutly kisses Christ’s bloodied hand, while Saint John contemplates the scene in the background on the right.
In the foreground on the left is the basin containing the instruments of the Passion (the crown of thorns and the nails).
Technique: This drawing was executed in black chalk with highlights in white chalk, creating dramatic chiaroscuro contrasts typical of the Baroque period.
Presumed origin: This high-quality drawing, created in the 17th or 18th century, may be a transposed drawing of the original work by a talented artist.
Condition: Note that the drawing, executed on laid paper from the 17th or 18th century, was later mounted onto thin cardboard, notably to reinforce the upper corners, which show perforations and, in one case, a small loss, two perforations (pinholes) halfway up, very close to the edge of the sheet, are worth noting, as well as two others in the lower corners.
